5 Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products You Can Make at Home

Emma Chen5 May 20262 min read

You don't need a cupboard full of expensive products to keep your home clean. These five DIY recipes use simple, natural ingredients that are kind to the planet — and your wallet.

1. All-Purpose Cleaner

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of essential oil (lemon or tea tree work beautifully) for a fresh scent. This works on most surfaces — just avoid natural stone.

2. Glass and Mirror Spray

Combine 2 cups of water, ½ cup of white vinegar, and ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol. Spray onto glass and wipe with a lint-free cloth or newspaper for a streak-free finish.

3. Bathroom Scrub

Mix ½ cup of bicarbonate of soda with enough liquid castile soap to form a paste. Apply to tiles, tubs, and basins. Scrub with a brush and rinse clean. Adds a lovely sparkle without harsh chemicals.

4. Wood Floor Cleaner

Add ¼ cup of white vinegar to a bucket of warm water. Mop as usual — the vinegar cuts through dirt without leaving residue. For sealed hardwood only; check your floor type first.

5. Fabric Freshener

Mix 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda into 2 cups of warm water. Add 5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil. Shake well before each use and lightly mist onto upholstery, curtains, and carpets.

A Word on What to Avoid

Avoid mixing vinegar with bleach (toxic fumes) or using vinegar on marble and granite (it etches the surface). Always test DIY solutions on a small hidden area first.

Want a Professional Touch?

If you'd prefer to leave the cleaning to someone else — especially someone who uses eco-friendly products — you can request a quote from a green cleaner in your area.

🌿 Clean home, clean conscience.
